What Makes Clothes/Hair/Makeup Dated?

We haven’t had an explicit thread about it for millennia: What makes clothes, hair, and makeup look outdated? (I know there are loads of influencers doing things like “Update your millennial look!” – if you have favorites, tell them in the comments!)

Last time we talked about it (in, huh, 2011), we were coming out of an era with round noses, puffy shoulders in blazer jackets, and the new trend (which we all hated) was open zippers on dresses. (It’s still a thing, unfortunately.) Color-block dresses were also very popular.

We are in an era where there are so many trends and they are all happening at the same time – it’s harder than ever to tell what seems outdated. (Sometimes, for example, I see commenters say that cobalt immediately felt like 2011 to them… but it will be big again in the fall.)

Interestingly, many reviewers in the original thread were discussing the “black bottom, solid color top, black cardigan” look – I don’t think there’s anything outdated about it, but I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily a groundbreaking combo

There was also an interesting discussion about “classic” looks like twin suits + pearls – the consensus at the time was that these looks were classic rather than outdated.

we had another discussion about style and trends a few years ago, along with my listing of various things that look like they’re out, like wearing belted cardigans (it’s been huge lately!) or brooches. I wouldn’t say these things are trendy though, but I guess if someone did this today, I’d think of it more as a gimmick style rather than “oh that’s the same look from the late 2000s”.

However, if someone wears a belted cardigan, a few brooches, round-toed shoes, a skirt with an exposed zipper… it starts to look like someone hasn’t updated their wardrobe since then. (Just add a J.Crew balloon necklace…)

I am particularly interested in hearing what seems outdated for hair and makeup – I would say sock buns are outdated, but I still love a messy bun.

Readers, what are your thoughts? What is the history of clothing, hair and makeup in this day and age?
