The viral TikTok (or #BeautyTok, according to some) trend “retinol sandwiching” is one of the hottest trends in the beauty industry… more than 22.5 million views and growing.

But how does it work and how do we do it?

Janna Ronert, IMAGE Skin Care The founder and esthetician describes her skincare technique as “using a layer of moisturizer before and after applying retinol so it’s a ‘sandwich’ between two other product layers.” The idea is to limit the skin irritation that retinol can sometimes cause.

Ronert recommends always choosing a light moisturizer so you don’t lose the effectiveness of the retinol. more to achieve a multi and encapsulated retinol. “Even before adding the sandwiching technique, an encapsulated retinol is less likely to cause irritation. I usually recommend adding the moisturizer after retinol because without the added layer of hydration the risk of sensitivity is higher. Additionally, I always remember that retinol can be drying on the skin – even for those with oily skin.” I see it, so most people need to load up on moisture while using it to avoid dryness or flaking.

Is this trend new?

While this trend may seem new to many, it is actually a widely recommended trend in the beauty field. “Estheticians and skin specialists have recommended applying retinol with a moisturizer for years to prevent the negative effects of irritation, dryness, and flaking that retinol can cause,” says Ronert.

And it’s definitely a worthwhile trend.

“I’m a fan of retinol sandwiches because you can get a big dose of retinol for plump collagen and a super dose of hydration in one program,” says Ronert. “It can help relieve irritation such as flaking or dryness that can sometimes be caused by retinol. It acts as a barrier between the active ingredient and the skin. Additionally, hydration after using retinol helps lock in moisture, which can help limit any kind of sensitivity.”

The key is to choose the right formula for your skin and stick to it. “Choose a retinol with an advanced delivery system like the encapsulated retinol mentioned above. This type of retinol means that the active ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin layer before being activated, so it’s highly effective yet still gentle on the skin.” IMAGE Skincare AGELESS total retinol-A crème It is the ideal dense blend of encapsulated retinol, glycolic acid and lactic acid.
