Hot summer temperatures often mean more of our legs are on display in an effort to stay cool. Not all women are sure to do this, so today I’m sharing reasons why you should confidently embrace and rock maxi dresses and midi skirts.

For our trip to Vancouver Island last weekend, I packed a few of my newest purchases from Nordstrom Rack. I like shopping Nordstrom Shelf because they make it easy to add high-quality pieces to my wardrobe at budget-friendly prices. They also offer free shipping for over $89, or you can shop online and pick up something from a Nordstrom Shelf or your Nordstrom store. My favorite way to buy them is online where I get the widest selection. They can also be easily returned to any Nordstrom Rack or Nordstrom location.

Midi Skirts

Midi skirts have become very popular this spring/summer. They offer a modest alternative to shorter skirts and are easier to move in. Midi skirts also give a flashy, pulled-together look for women who prefer to show less legs. Length is important, so make sure it ends at a point where your leg narrows.

Many midi are overloaded with frills, layers, or frou-frou details that don’t appeal to my more minimal style aesthetic, so I focused on this one. Max Studio plain A-line wrap skirt. This is a sophisticated black and cream color, a clean geometric print that visually turns gray… it’s one of my favorite neutral tones. The waist is pull-on style with a small tie that I chose to tuck inside the elastic waistband. A machine washable polyester that comes out of my suitcase wrinkle-free!

This skirt is 33 1/2″ long so it’s just above the ankle on me. I combined it with plain Nic+Zoe tank which is almost sold out. Similar HereAnd HereAnd Here. I find an unadorned black tank invaluable all year round, but especially for layering in the summer.

On the coast the weather is always breezy and we were on our way for the evening, so I added that. long sleeve cotton gauze shirt and tied it around my waist. I am buying quite a collection of cotton gauze this summer. They’re great for travel, never need ironing, and add some drape without warming me up. It comes in six great colors, plus size here.

My brother and aunt were going out to dinner, so I stepped it up a bit. These Clarks Platform Sandals because I knew I wouldn’t be walking for miles. I own several pairs of Clarks wedge sandals and always find them super comfortable. The wedge adds height without throwing my foot forward like a high heel does. The strap placement feels secure on my feet so I can walk easily.

Maxi dresses are a great option when the weather gets warmer. Women of all sizes can wear a maxi dress because it pulls the gaze down, which lengthens your look. And because they cover your legs, you don’t have to worry about wearing a hose, using a tanner, or showing unsightly veins that might bother you.

You’re not seeing doubles here with this front swivel dress. You remember I wore this maxi dress in gray. During my trip to Maimi early this spring. I liked it so much that I decided it had to be a nice color and this Wedgewood Blue called my name.

This T-Tahari dress It’s incredibly affordable ($24.97) and easy to dress up or wear as a swimsuit cover. A supple rayon/spandex blend that comes in six colors and wears out fast as summer arrives. I chose the middle to make some extra space in my stomach but I could wear the smaller one as well.

Twist front detailing is a nice distraction in the tummy area and actually helps to camouflage lumps and bumps. I also like that the armholes are not too deep because at this age loose armholes are not my friend. I don’t know about you, but I can lift all the free weights in the world, but my armpits will never be the same.

You can wear a necklace on this dress, but I think it’s distracting, so I chose simple rings. It was hot and sunny, so I wore these. Steve Madden flat sandals meeting friends for lunch on the patio of a local restaurant followed by some window shopping. i can’t pass any Bookstore without checking it out for my next great read.

These Steve Madden Hoku slippers super comfortable and soft enough to not pinch my bunion when my feet inevitably swell. They have a padded sole and come in three colors. I decided that white will be used the most in my wardrobe this summer. They have a nice grip sole and are very flexible.
