Happy Plus Size Bridal Week! Every year we love to feature the latest plus size bridal gowns and wedding designers, and today we are at ECSTATIC to share an interview with Jenine Nerecina of Nerecina Couture.
Jenine is an exclusive wedding dress designer and she made me laugh over and over during her interview. Jenine and I met a few days after Oscar. (More on Jenine’s red carpet looks in a future post!)and when he was tired he also glowed!
Let’s talk about custom plus size wedding dresses!
Custom Plus Size Wedding Dresses
Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Nerecina Couture produces plus-size wedding gowns for brides who want to stand out.
“Brides decide on Nerecina wedding dresses because they can’t find what they are looking for in big box office companies. My aim is to make fashion pieces, gowns that combine wedding dresses and fashion. As a designer, I make bridal options that really don’t exist.”
Call of Life
When asked how she got into fashion design, Jenine laughed and (she had a bright eye) “This was my only thing! When I learned to sew in the Philippines at the age of 7, I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer. My grandmother taught me and I really started sewing clothes starting in high school.
Fast forward to 2018 a few years later and she founded the Jenine brand. “Before Nerecina, I had a flat size brand. But when I started Nerecina Couture, I knew I wanted to have all bodies – but I also knew I wanted to change it. I said, ‘I’m only going to show fat girls.

“When I told the people in my life what my plan was, I got a little sidetracked” he shares. “An old friend told me, ‘A skinny girl would never look at a fat girl and ask what designer she’s wearing.’”
Jenine grins at this memory, her smile getting bigger as she adds, “Now, whenever we shoot outside, people always ask who we are. And when a skinny person asks what his brand is, I smile to myself.”
Inspiration
Because there are so many aspects to their creativity, designers can sometimes feel overwhelmed when asked about their inspiration.
for jennie, “So for me, I love the new fabrics I make in great silhouettes. I’m really thinking about how the fabric will look on the body.” Jenine’s love of innovative fabrics is definitely evident in her pieces, as she often features feathers, sequins, pure black mesh (ooh la la!) and other design components.
Multi-Use Dresses
Since Jenine designs for unique or non-traditional brides, she always tries to create designs that can be re-weared. I want brides to be able to say“I can wear this to my wedding and to a charity gala for work.”
Jenine works with her bridal clients at her Los Angeles studio or is happy to meet her on Zoom. “Some brides are nervous about Zoom,” she shares, “but it works really well. I accompany my client through the whole process and we have fun and laughs while doing it.”
2023 Plus Size Wedding Dress Trends
When asked about plus-size bridal trends for 2023, Jenine shared that more brides are ordering special looks for “courthouse weddings” or seeing smaller ceremonies outside of a traditional big wedding.
“I also find that brides are more adventurous with plus-size reception looks.” he shares. “Jumpsuits are really popular and I made my satin jumpsuit in various shades of white for the reception look. I really love this.
