Maybe you’ve seen it in the BET+ series. Firstly Spouses Club or like romantic comedies great one and Always Be My Maybe. Maybe you referenced the comedy timing in the first Netflix stand-up special. Book by Michelle Buteau: Survival of the Thickest

Buteau published his book, Survival of the Thickest: Trials of a Plus-Size Girl in a Small-Thinking World, in December 2020 and I was in a rush to get my copy. While Michelle won’t be able to showcase her book on a book tour due to the pandemic, I’ve invested in hearing more about her story and how this vibrant, bright, spirited, plus-size woman has graced our screens. Michelle’s comedy is transparent, relatable, and contagious, so I expected her memories to be all these things and more.

When I read Survival of the Thickest, I laughed, then cried, then laughed some more, and then cried some more. Her book explored her journey with Catholicism and her path to motherhood, a fair-skinned Caribbean Black girl in Jersey who grew up to be a thick and plus-size girl, dating, Catholic.

A Moment Turns into a Sitcom

It’s no surprise anymore, in 2022, Michelle Buteau’s book finds a series slot with Netflix, where she can share her creativity and explore her book coming to life. The show will not only be based on Buteau’s memory, but he will also feature in the show.

“The series will revolve around newly single Mavis Beaumont, who is unexpectedly forced to rebuild her life after putting all her eggs in one man’s basket,” the streaming service said in Netflix’s statement on the show. When asked about her ongoing partnership with Netflix, Michelle said, “Finding a home with Netflix was so amazing. To say that I am excited to continue my relationship with them would be an understatement. I am above and below the moon!”

It’s also important to note that one of the minds who helped give the green light to this show is Jasmyn Lawson, a cultural, social and innovative creator. Jasmyn Lawson is also responsible for bringing us some of our favorite shows from the ’90s and early 2000s at the start of the pandemic and during the height of quarantine.

I know you’ll remember the fall of Sister Sister, Moesha, The Parkers, Half & Half that put us all down in 2020! It’s worth noting that Jasmyn is also a plus-size Black woman and creator, who saw the value of Survival of the Thickest and believed in the project from the moment she first met Michelle.

As a plus-size black creator myself, I saw and knew the power of walking into a room and having someone who sees themselves in my work and wants to see it grow. I became that person for someone else. I look forward to seeing a show centered around a newly single and plus size Black woman! I’m excited to see how her life will change, how Michelle’s character, Mavis will fit in, the dates she will go on, how she will explore her body and find joy in it all. .

Survival of the Thickest will be an eight-episode series that gives us eight more reasons to smile. Survival of the Thickest will be available in paperback on February 1 prior to production of the show.
