Garcia admits that she wouldn’t actually audition for Jasmine Flores. Instead, it was a friend who encouraged him to go. He liked how extroverted Jasmine’s character was and quickly came to terms with being the “class clown”.

“[I] I saw the pain immediately because I was the clown of the class. […] If you build these walls around you, people cannot harm you. And that’s a lot of what he’s done,Garcia stated.

It was in season two that viewers saw Garcia’s role rise. Jasmine was the caregiver of her father, a disabled veteran who served in Afghanistan. As a result, fans no longer see the bright, bubbly Jasmine. Instead, we experience the raw, heartfelt emotions Jasmine feels from caring for her father.

Jasmine works hard and gets accepted into her dream school, the University of California, Berkeley. Unfortunately, her dreams are cut short when she learns that she can’t leave Freeridge because her aunt can no longer care for her father.

A bittersweet ending for a sweet character. While Jasmine didn’t get a happy ending, Garcia appreciated the growth given to her role.

“I’m so grateful that they let me show it and didn’t do this cartoon for four seasons because I don’t think people would get that close to him or care about him as much as they do.”

We Are Not Monoliths

Garcia moved from Orlando, Florida to become an actress just a few years before her role in “On My Block.” “We are not a monolith,” he explains. And the lack Latin characters and therefore champion shows and movies that showcase underrepresented voices.

“There are very few of us [on screen] Trying to represent everyone is difficult. So hopefully our show will step up other shows to tell stories that have long been underrepresented. ”

Garcia makes it clear that it’s the same girl from Orlando. She is grateful for the success of “On My Block” and the opportunity to play Jasmine. Jasmine because her character taught her to be herself without apologizing. He is proud of all the young lives his character will influence.

I was a big fan of “On My Block” and Jasmine was one of my favorite characters on the team.
