I just wanted to say how much I love your transition to ‘gray’. The color and hairstyle suit your cool color very well. I note that you include the touches of blue that are always beautiful with your hair and skin in your photographs. Did this change require a major wardrobe inspection and discarding items that no longer fit you? I’m a warm color with ever-present freckles like your friend but during the 17 week quarantine I was afraid of being ‘gray’. To me, gray is a cool blue-based color, so I’m worried that I’m going to need loads of new clothes eventually. Is there such a thing as a ‘warm’ gray hair color? Margaret
Warm Gray vs Cool Gray
go gray one interesting experience and I’m lucky enough to have a warm, undertone friend who also embraces her gray. Alison Goodman (Spicy Gal Goes Gray posts here) has embraced her gray as well, and when you see our photos side-by-side (below) you can see how her warmer gray is different from my cooler gray.

In fact, when Alison stopped by to redo the color analysis with her new gray hair, I noticed how much taupe (brown-grey) she was compared to my silver-white grey. The base color where you are graying from a warmer or cooler natural hair color will change the look of your gray.
Should It Go Gray?
Only you can decide this! Lucky for me, I have beautiful, even gray hair, according to my hairdresser. The front is lighter than the back (90% gray on the front, 70% gray on the back) but there’s a fairly even variation from front to back. Instead of going gray from a bunch of dark hair, I decided not to go gray until it was mostly gray.
You never know unless you experience it yourself. It must be something you want to do. The way I approached it was knowing I could always repaint if I didn’t like it. But I wanted to give myself enough time with gray hair (like at least a year) to see how I felt about it. I know it takes a long time to get used to the big changes, it took me at least a year to get used to seeing myself as a blonde instead of a brunette, so I have to give myself at least the same amount of time. I got used to my silver before making any decisions.
Wardrobe Changes Go Gray
I definitely didn’t throw away my old wardrobe! Going gray doesn’t mean getting rid of everything. There are ways to adapt your existing wardrobe as you gray out. Now that I’ve switched from dark hair to light hair, there has been a bigger change in my wardrobe. ideal value changed (The ideal value is the overall depth or lightness of your hair color – which should mimic more of your outfit).
I now have some outfits that are a bit brighter than my best density and have softened a bit, so I’m going to wear a brighter lipstick with them (as in the picture above) and my hair is pretty white and shiny as my skin is bright and in front of me – which allows me to wear brighter colors. .
Instead, do things like overpainting Brighter colors with a bit of gray are a great way to protect your sideburns, but will work better for you if your coloring has gotten smokier and softer with gray hair.
It changing color and value contrasts With hair color changes that make customizations in your wardrobe important – and this is where dyes are a great tool to transform your outfits from not-so-great to great – it becomes gorgeous again with your new color.
Given that gray is a softer, more smoky color – then the colors that make you look prettier will become a little softer and smokier. While this won’t last forever – it depends on whether you stay gray or have shiny white hair that eventually gets brighter again.

Replacing Neutrals
What I changed was my neutrals. When I have very dark brown hair (it looked black to many) black and deep cool browns were my go-tos (along with a deep navy blue). when i changed to platinum blonde, my best neutral was white and a soft denim blue.
Now that I’m gray, gray has become my most neutral color and I’ve started collecting gray clothes, these never looked good when I had black hair, but now they’re great.
