Tips for Combining Tops and Blazers with Different Skirt Shapes
When you think about putting together an outfit, you want to create an outfit that is aesthetically pleasing and contains harmonious elements.
To do this, you want to consider the principles of coordination, or elements found in other parts of your outfit that already tie the outfit together as a whole.
There are 4 main principles of coordination – these are:
I was recently asked how I would style a curved hem top with a blazer or jacket. A t-shirt with a curved hem gets its name from the rounded lower hemline. How do you style a blouse with a flared skirt with a blazer or jacket? It is based on two principles of coordination – Associated Shapes and Associated Lines.
Principle of Associated Shapes
This principle talks about the shapes of pockets, collars and hemlines. To create a cohesive look, you want to repeat basic design shapes within a garment or outfit.
A v-neck top will pair well with a necklace that ends in a point or follows the oval-neck profile.
A slightly curved collar will look best when the jacket’s lower hemline has the same slight curve.
A pocket flap or pocket shape should relate to the curve in the bottom of the jacket.
This top features an asymmetrical hem that works well with the asymmetry of the moto jacket – both the zipper and line of the jacket hem
Associating the shapes of your garments with the shapes of the details in your garments is not limited to the construction of a garment. A geometric-shaped blouse will go better with a blazer with a notched collar and pointed nose than a jacket with a peter’s or mandarin collar and a round nose.
Related Line Principle
It is created by lines, seams, details and openings in clothes. They need to relate to each other to create an eye-pleasing garment.
A top with an asymmetrical neckline will look best with an asymmetrical hem as the two lines are related.
A princess-stitched jacket that creates vertical lines on the front will go well with a skirt with panels or a scrunch-front trousers.
Here the top has a straight hem like a jacket – so they work easily and well together
So Should You Mix or Match Skirt Lengths?
It is better to match your hemlines to create an aesthetically pleasing outfit. For a curved blouse hemline, the flatter the curve, the less obvious the difference will be.
Wearing a curved hem blouse with a blazer will look best with a blazer jacket that features curved elements such as a curved patch pocket, curved jacket hem, or other curved clothing elements such as a flowy scarf. But if the bottom of the blazer covers the hem of the top, it doesn’t really matter because you can’t see the curve. However, this won’t really work well if the top hem is hanging under your blazer skirt.
Here the hem of my top is gently curved, but it is significantly shorter than the hem of my jacket so you don’t notice the difference in lines as the jacket takes up most of the fold.
If your jacket or jacket has a sharp-edge hemline, tuck the top in so that the horizontal lines of the blazer hemline match the horizontal lines of your zipped blouse.
