Hats are my go-to accessory on vacation and I love to bring a few. Not only do they protect me from the sun, they also add flair to my outfits and hide lots of bad hair days. Traveling using hand luggage only, I need to pack my hats because I look pretty silly when wearing more than one at a time. Here’s how to pack a hat in a handbag.
Let’s start with the obvious, now they make amazing packable hats that are very durable. They are usually made of paper, polyester, cotton, nylon or raffia, which makes them super flexible. They can bend or take a beating without cracking like real straw hats do. I don’t recommend putting a hat in a backpack or gym bag because their lack of structure does not provide support.

Place heavy items at the wheeled end of your suitcase and the opposite half of the hat, then cushion them with soft clothing.
Here’s how to pack a hat in a wheelbarrow
Start by covering the bottom of the flat side of your suitcase (not the side with the telegraph holder) with a thin layer of soft clothing such as t-shirts and underwear, then place the hat upside down in the middle. If you are packing more than one hat, first glue them together, then pack them as a single unit. This gives the crown extra stability and helps prevent crushing.
Some people like to pack their hats with the visors down. I find it easier to control when I pack them with the top down. Lift the hem from one side and start placing the clothes underneath, tightening them up to the top and the side of the suitcase.
Nothing harsh next to the hats. Hard items such as eyeglass cases pass through the outside or other half of the bag. I continue like this until my clothes are in line with the visor on all sides. When the edges are fully supported by clothes, I fill the crown with my softest clothes such as socks, T-shirts, swimsuits, underwear. You need to pack it fully so that the top does not collapse.
Finally, I fill it to the brim and cover the entire hat up to the edge of the suitcase with softer clothes. If one packable The visor of the hat hangs from the side of your suitcase, you can often fold it back into the bag by squeezing a t-shirt into the area you need to fold it. I don’t recommend it if you have cardboard that hardens in your mouth or if it’s real straw!
My hats come out of the suitcase fold and are wrinkle free. My hats are increasingly switching to the packable types as they are also infused with a UPF, sun protection factor. Great hats in stylish shapes are available at all price points.
If your hat is slightly squashed, you can steam it in a teapot at home or take it to the bathroom after a hot shower and try styling it again.
With care, many different types of hats, including crisp straw, can be packed this way. Structured hats are more difficult to pack because they are less durable, but this technique works for them as long as the visor is not wider than a suitcase… in which case, I suggest you travel with your beautiful hat on.
Some tips on hat fit-
I swear if your hat doesn’t fit right this hat size reducer strips from Amazon. Simply fit one or more into the crown until you get the perfect fit. I’d rather buy a hat that’s a little too big and adjust it because tight hats give me a headache and there’s little you can do to stretch them.
