Often times, the first time I put my clothes on (the way the pieces are taken off the shelf), the look is terribly tasteless and the clothes seem to be “wearing” me. But a few strategic tweaks, rolls and stacks are often all it takes to turn the look from understated to proud! Below I’ve outlined some simple guidelines I should follow and you can quickly follow along. video here.
1. Wear skin-colored shoes or wear shoes with the same color sole
The easiest and most effective tip! Whether it’s dark jeans with dark shoes, bare legs with nude pumps, or my default for winter – black tights with black booties.
2. Don’t suffocate your waist
This can be done in a number of ways – adding a belt over a looser outfit, wearing a long top close to your natural waistline, or just wearing high-waisted bottoms, just to name a few!
Below, on the left, my sweater and skirt join in straight lines on both sides to form a shapeless rectangular outfit. Since this is a lower skirt, I rolled up the waistband so that the waistline sits higher, close to my navel, and then tucked in half of the sweater to further define my waist.
3. Finish with a long thin outer layer
Both jackets below really work, but I prefer the longer one as it really streamlines the overall look. Often petite ladies dread midi length pieces, but I love a longer cardigan or jacket to create visually long lines.
For a shorter jacket, the key for me is to choose slightly cropped ones like the bottom one that hits the widest part of my body (my hips) rather than adding volume to the widest area.
