Happy 2023 friends!! I hope your new year has had a good start. I had two weeks of R&D and hopes for a mental reset, but this germ season had other plans for our entire family. Nick has had the worst and is still bedridden and little ones “sliding” off a couch, screaming over every toy and craving AM’s 3rd snack, while I’m just a few clicks away.

During the last week of each year, I like to work on a big summary post about my top buys and readers’ favorites of the year, but this time it’s going to be a little late! In the meantime, I wanted to share a little closet maintenance post to get organized in the new year.

After the kids were down at night, the cleaning and tidying was therapeutic to say the least. After sharing a photo I like shelf dividers In my IG stories last week, I wanted to answer a few more questions about how I fold and hang my sweaters. Check out my Instagram reel video to see the folding ends in action Here!

1. Folding Storage (Shelf or Drawer)

as I mentioned small space storage poleI store my knits in under-bed drawers and also in sweater racks. these dividers. I’ve seen this common method of folding on many Tik Tok accounts over the past year, where one end of the garment is tucked into an opening at the other end so that when you remove an item from a pile the garment doesn’t open easily or just move them around in a drawer. I’ve now converted ALL of my laundry folding to this method, from sweaters to jeans to T-shirts, leggings and tights. It has been nothing but a game changer!

Again, this method is MUCH easier to follow in video format, so be sure to check out my IG reel!

how to make the best way to fold a sweater
  1. Lay the sweater on a flat surface.
  2. Fold one sleeve + about a quarter of the sweater body width across the sweater.
  3. Fold the sleeve down. If the sleeve length is longer than the body length of the sweater, fold the excess length back slightly.
  4. Repeat on the other side.
  5. Fold the bottom of the folded sweater a little more than halfway.
  6. Key Step: Use your hand to create a “pocket” opening where the bottom end of the folded sweater is and insert the top of the folded sweater into this opening.
  7. Request! You have a neatly folded sweater.
2. Hanging Storage

If you choose to hang your sweaters, be sure to do so in a way that the knitting does not stretch, especially from the edges of the hangers to the shoulder areas. If I had plenty of hanging space in a large walk-in closet, I’d probably prefer to hang more of my knitting so I can clearly see which piece is which. Here’s how you can fold the sweaters on the hanger to prevent stretching:

  1. Lay the sweater flat.
  2. Fold the sweater in half vertically so that the sleeves are aligned. Thread the hanger over the folded sweater at the underarm joint.
  3. Fold the arms over the top of the sling and pass them under the bottom bar of your sling.
  4. Fold the body of the sweater over the hanger. Now you can hang your sweaters neatly without overstretching the shoulders!
