Recently I was asked to chat more about how to define the undertone of colors.

Overtone vs. Undertone

Understanding how to choose a color undertone

The overtone is the light color you see – we label warm tones (yellow, orange, red, pink) as warm because they give us sun, fire, heater, etc. They remind me of hot things like We label the cold tone. The colors (blue, green violet) are like cool, because they remind us of colder things – water, cool forests, night.

Undertone of Colors

A color’s undertone is how it’s created – what it’s mixed with.

  • blue cool
  • yellow hot

Thus, colors with more yellow in them (even if blue) have a warm undertone.

Colors with more blue in them (even if they are warm-toned like red) will have a cool undertone.

The closer a color is to yellow on the color wheel, the more naturally warm it is usually.

The closer a color is to blue on the color wheel, the cooler it is usually.

What about red, which is equidistant from blue and yellow? Add some yellow and it will warm up, add some blue and it will cool.

Black and White are both cool, so adding white or black can make a cooler version of a color (but not completely change its undertone.
