i like shorts; They have their time and place, and I’m not ready to give up on them anytime soon. But I wear them a little differently than I did 50+ years ago. At my 20s, 30s, and even early 40s, I could wear a fun pair of colorful short shorts with just about any old tee and look cute. Now, I just look grumpy. Instead, I prefer to look more collected in casual shorts, which have a slightly elegant feel.

Even though my legs are still in shape, the short shorts seem too small for me. On the other hand, Bermuda shorts can feel a bit boring if that’s my only option. Sometimes I like to wear a more sassy shorts, like at the beach. I’ve tried and found that I’m fine with at least a 5-9 inch or even 11 inseam. (Anything shorter looks like I wish I was 18!)
I suggest ordering a bunch of shorts and trying them on to see what looks and feels right for you. You’ll understand when you look in your full-length mirror. I can guarantee it! (Lol!) Livelier, more tailored shorts look brighter than looser, flowy shorts. Cuffed shorts are on trend and add style and sophistication.

2. Be Thoughtful About Choosing a Top
The next step is to choose a top. To create a gorgeous outfit, you need to be thoughtful about it. What look are you going for? T-shirts are good when they are neat and fit your curves better. This gives you a very shiny, sporty look. I like feminine and silky tops to elevate the shorts look, for example in my first photo with rusty shorts.
I could easily wear this with a tee, but it would look pretty plain. Instead, I found this long, silky top on Amazon with a lace-trimmed neckline that features a modern leopard print mixed with a few subtle flowers. It’s soft and flowy and I can wear it stretched out for a comfortable, elegant look. The fabric alone makes it look much more expensive than a simple T-shirt.

Many women realize that they want armbands after age 50 and that’s okay; Shorts with leg openings worn with a sleeved top will make you look elegant. For example, you can wear white shorts with a beautiful peasant blouse with long sleeves. All the details are also important. They also set the mood of your outfit. For example, a nice top with a small ruffle at the neckline will make your outfit look more romantic and feminine.

Accessories are the secret sauce to bring all the elements together and create a stylish shorts look. Modern, sophisticated accessories elevate the shorts and make them look more stylish than fun. Watch your shoes. Say no to flip flops and try mules, bold sneakers, flip flops, wedges, espadrilles – anything more interesting.
In some cases, add a stylish bag and a belt. A touch of jewelery (it looks too tacky) is a must when designing an elegant shorts outfit. And of course, a wonderful couple of sunnies are the icing on the cake.
