I’ve felt bad and bad for years on Valentine’s Day. Often my saving grace was to get up to my knees to report New York Fashion Week, so I was able to banish sad thoughts and focus on my work for most of the day. Like New Year’s Eve or birthdays, Valentine’s Day can make many people feel insecure about where they are in their lives. Love is love.

“Valentine’s Day is truly a celebration of love and loving feelings. We can love a large number of people in our lives, not just romantically. Planning a Valentine’s Day with a loved one, a friend, a family member or even a group of friends is a good way to increase your gratitude for having love in your life; I no longer have a romantic partner.”

Don’t pay Hallmark.

“You don’t need to believe the idea that Valentine’s Day should even be a holiday. In fact, it is not a religious or family-oriented holiday, but a commercial holiday that does not require observance. Keep it in perspective this way and your sadness may feel out of place.

“You are not alone and a lot of people want to find that special someone, which is why they organize singles events on Valentine’s Day. You will all be alert and perhaps more open to meeting someone that day than any other day.

Love yourself.

To find and truly nurture a loving relationship, you must first love yourself well. Find a great movie, treat yourself to naps for dinner, snuggle in your favorite pajamas, and gift yourself a holiday to celebrate loving you… you deserve it.”
