Etiquette: What New Rules Are There?

a few weeks ago cut There was an interesting article about “new rules” for etiquette, tipping, messaging, ghosting, hosting and more… so let’s discuss! What old etiquette do you still follow? What new etiquette do you know? (Made cut got it right?)

Parts of The Cut’s Etiquette Advice I Disagree With most

“You can cancel all your plans until 12 am” (#2) – really? As an introvert who almost always wants to cancel, this sounds utterly rude to me.

Heterosexual people should not use the word partner (#10) – This intrigued me, but I’m approaching this from a creator’s perspective and I would raise an eyebrow if official communication from a company, school, or charity wasn’t inclusive, say +1 or say business partner.

For group meals with friends, always split the bill evenly. and put it on a card (#55) – yes, really? I haven’t been to a ton of group dinners in the last three years, but it feels very, very easy for the server to take multiple credit cards. I realize it can be annoying to say, “Put $50 on this card and $100 on this card”, but if the group is small enough (up to 4 people), it seems fine.

Whether you’re on the subway, at the office or at a party, you should be the first to jump when things go wrong for some reason. (#70) – Again: really? Part of the theory here is that you have to be brave enough to leave a boring party so you’re freeing others to do the same – but some of my expectations from My Very Good Friends are that we come and stay, even for parties. do the boring ones and what you can, make it more interesting.

They say it’s ok to text, email or DM anyone at any hour (#94) — emails and DMs, yes, but NO for messaging. So many of my friends go to bed early these days that I really feel bad for texting people after 9:30pm unless it’s something serious.
