Yin and Yang = Balance

I have mentioned the concepts of Yin and Yang several times before. (you can find them here)but to sum it up quickly, it’s all about balance when you think of Yin and Yang.

The balance between:

  • soft and strong
  • feminine and masculine
  • Availability and authority
  • light and dark
  • Smoky and bright

So when you think of Yin and Yang in terms of clothing and accessories, there are different elements associated with each.

The Yin Elements of Clothing and Design include:

  • Curvy lines
  • fine lines
  • horizontal lines
  • curved shapes
  • small shapes
  • low contrast
  • muted/smoky/soft colors
  • soft tissues
  • Lightweight fabrics and details
  • consider fabrics
  • matte fabrics
  • sheer fabrics
  • Natural flowing patterns

The Yang Elements of Clothing and Design include:

  • straight lines
  • solid lines
  • Bold/bold lines
  • vertical lines
  • angled shapes
  • large scale
  • bright colors
  • high contrast
  • Brittle fabrics
  • heavy fabrics
  • thick fabrics
  • Shiny Fabrics

Communicating With Your Clothes and Jewelry

Once you think about these design elements and what you want to convey with your clothes, you can use these design elements to design an outfit and choose jewelry that speaks the way you choose.

Do you want to look more professional? Then add more Yang details to your outfits.

Would you like to be seen as a friendlier person? Then add more Yin elements to your outfits.

You can always balance both by combining Yin and Yang in any outfit.

Use these design elements carefully and thoughtfully to give you a subconscious advantage at work. Understanding that men are more naturally Yang (hence seen as more authoritative) because of their height, deep voices, and solid, heavy, vertical style of clothing means that it’s important as a woman to be able to choose what to wear in a way that gives you added strength, and so knowing this subliminal, silent language is a great tool to use when deciding what to wear.

What are your features?

  • Are you taller or shorter?
  • Are you dark haired or blonde?
  • Is the contrast value high or low?

Each of these elements of your own design will affect how others treat you. Just as I discovered when I switched from dark value and high value contrast to light value and low value contrast, I was told I looked “friendly” but I hadn’t changed, it was just my color.

Choosing Jewelry to Match or Balance Your Features

By thinking about the concepts of Yin and Yang and the rest of the outfit you choose, you can make your outfits look like:

More Yang

  • larger scale jewelery
  • Higher contrast jewelry
  • More angled shapes in your jewelry
More Yang pendants - angled shapes, heavier weight, larger scale

My necklace here is more Yang – heavier, more angled shapes, larger scale and a bit of contrast with my dress, my bracelet is a larger one-piece cuff, my ring is large scale

More Yins

  • Smaller scale jewelery
  • Low contrast colors
  • Curvy shapes in your jewelry
Yin necklace and earrings - lighter, sparkly, curvy

My jewelery choices here are more Yin – they match the outfit (low contrast), they are lighter in weight, curvy shape and more delicate and sparkly.

Or you can choose a combination of the two and look for naturally balanced gems.

Erstwilder peacock necklace - yin and yang balance

This Erstwilder necklace It is a balance of Yin and Yang – convoluted (yin) but on a larger scale (yang)

Balance of yin and yang in your jewelery - Erstwilder butterfly necklace

Here is another Erstwilder (Gunggamburra Butterfly) The piece that has a natural balance between Yin and Yang. The curvy shape of the butterflies and the dots in the design are more Yin, but the slightly larger scale adds a bit of Yang to their look.

The choice is yours and you can change the look of an outfit simply by changing the jewelry to be more Yin or more Yang.

Have fun playing with this concept.
