Reader Question: Headwear for professional environments

is there anything like that? Except when I’m working (I work in a creative education environment), I’m cold and wear a hat most days.

I’ve tried wearing many different types of hats over the years, but depending on the hat I feel either very casual or very stylized.

Either way, it doesn’t sound very professional to me. Is it just a case of not wearing a hat indoors? Or not wearing a hat at work? I would like to know your thoughts!

How to Wear a Hat Indoors in Winter

There are a few things to think about with this question:

Where do you work – is this environment suitable?

While in a more creative setting it might be fine to wear some kind of hat, it would not be in a conservative or traditional setting.

What Kind of Hat?

There is one type of hat that is most likely to work indoors in the winter, and that is the beanie, because in some ways it can look more like an accessory (like a scarf) than a hat. Berets can also work, but for many they are harder to wear!

Visor hats are more difficult to wear indoors because the visor partially covers your face, which can block some of your eyes and reduce your ability to communicate with others. A raised brim on a fedora is a much better option than a down brim on a cloche or bucket hat.

What Color Hat?

If you really wanted to wear a hat in the winter, I would choose a hat without a brim and make it a fashion statement (as an attribute accessory to your outfit) or a hat in the color of your hair. it blends in with your hair and is less obvious and distracting.

How to Wear a Hat

Ideally, when wearing hats indoors, style the hats so that they sit in the front and the back of your head rather than covering your eyes. Keep your face away from the hat as much as possible so others don’t feel it is covering your face and your ability to communicate freely.

There is no right answer but these are my thoughts and you can try them yourself. Sometimes wearing a hat can feel foreign but you get used to it pretty quickly, at other times you may feel that wearing a hat is like a costume and not unique to you. Different styles of hats can provoke different internal reactions, and only you know what’s right for you!
