Recently, on February 18, the “Rumors” singer took to Instagram with great excitement to announce the premiere date of her new Amazon Prime show. Lizzo Pays Attention to Big Grrrls March 25. Lizzo has always been clear about asking every aspect of her performances to embody who she is. And an important part of it are the background dancers who help shape the scene with it. Lizzo described this show as “the biggest moment of my career so far.”
The show’s producer, Makiah Green, shared that she came to this experience, “excited to center and celebrate the BIG GRRRLS and show some respect for the bold girls everywhere who are the worst who’ve done it here!” Over the course of eight episodes, the contestants will go through Lizzo’s dance training camp competing in different difficulties and through a house that comes with its own drama.
Fat girls will be on Amazon every week. They move their bodies confidently on TV. Competition for a real opportunity – a chance to be creative and follow your dreams. Fat girls will dance wildly on TV every week and it will be no joke. They won’t be one of 25, they won’t be compared to their thinner counterparts every week, they won’t be judged by their weekly size, and they won’t be told how many pounds they need to lose to be successful in this industry. Growing up as a creative kid I once had dreams of becoming a dancer – sometimes I still do. To this day, whenever I dance, I feel most free and grounded. People often tell me what they believe to be compliments, “You’re light feet” which we know stands for “you’re acting really well for a big girl”. When I was younger and reality quiz TV was at its peak, all I saw was big girls or industry big girls (because we all know in the industry that if you are over 12 you are automatically considered fat but luckily we know better now) to be judged, humiliated and treated as second-class people.
From Toccarra on America’s Next Top Model, from Frenchie Davis on American Idol, to Goldie on Flavor of Love, the message was clear – we don’t want to see big girls here. When I was younger, I desperately wanted to dance competitively and dance on stage, but no one would let me see that as a possibility in my body. So I danced for myself instead.
A new day
Fortunately, it’s a new day and time. While this won’t be the first TV competition to focus on celebrating plus-size women, we can thank Mo’Nique’s FAT Luck for it, Lizzo still paving the way with the plan laid out for her. Lizzo is looking for new dancers in the background and we’ll be there the entire trip!
