We recently discussed plus size sportswear and various places to shop for it. It’s a nice list that’s grown over the years, but what if your hectic life takes you beyond a walk or run? What if life takes you for a walk? Skiing? And more? Then you will need a great mix of plus size outdoor clothing.
Over the years, it seems as if the world has realized that plus-size people exist and that we are layered and live life to the fullest. We did a raffle a few years ago. We started to dig a little deeper and noticed multiple communities centered around and advocating the plus-size outdoor lifestyle. So, before we consider making a list of plus-size outerwear options, we thought we’d share it to get to know the communities and a few people in the field that have championed this niche in the plus-size field.
5 Big Size Outdoor Societies You Should Know
1. The Great Climb
“Making climbing more accessible for fat people”
created by Sam Ortiz Based in Washington, Climb Big (officially known as Big Girls Climb Too)Climb started making Big “After struggling to find a place outdoors, he himself climbs in a more accessible way.”
On a mission to rock climbing and doing outdoor “more accessible for fat people” Climb Big addresses the representation, accessibility, gear, and apparel needed to climb safely and confidently for plus-size adventurers. Climb Big confidently provides the help and support needed to do this.
2. Fat Girls Walk
“The Road Is Not Scale”
Fat Girls Walk was created by Summer Michaud-Skog. “She describes herself as a fat queer woman who likes to take walks.” The Fat Girls Walk for Summer is about “fat activism, body liberation, and the outdoor community.”
Fat Girls Walk has multiple features FGH sections Across the USA, in 22 cities. If you’re worried about being a slow walker or holding the group back, fear not! They deliberately set the speed to the slowest walker so everyone can participate.
Summer is also the author. fat girls walking: : A Comprehensive Guide to Getting Outdoors of Any Size or Talent, a book that was published last year and received rave reviews! If you want to read what and how to hike before diving in, this book is for you.

3. Plus Size Backpacking Travel
“Now we want to empower people of size to help them realize that you can also carry a plus size in your backpack.”
Plus Size Backpacking by Charlotte Buell (@basecampcreative) noticed that there is no group on FB specifically for plus size backpackers. Charlotte asked “Create a safe and inclusive space for plus-size people to ask questions and share information on all things backpacking, JUDGEMENT FREE!!!”
Join the other 6,000+ members of this group to ask questions, share stories, or make friends with other backpackers who are curious about nature. Whether you’re a beginner, avid backpacker or have years and years of experience under your belt, Plus Size Backpacking Travel It is a great resource for you.
4. Women of the Trail
“Trail Dames is a walking club for curvy women.”
If you love hiking the trails, exploring the outdoors, and doing it with others who look and live like you, Trail Dames is a group to look into. Created by President Anna Huthmaker, she attempted to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2003. “I took six months off work, walked 700 miles, broke my foot, and met more amazing people than I ever imagined.”
Realizing that she is the only plus-size person on the hiking trails, Anna, knowing that she can’t keep all the fun to herself, founded this group, decided she had to share, and Women of the Trail was created.
Trail Dames mission “Welcome, empower and educate women of all shapes, sizes and levels of experience and fitness to explore nature responsibly. Trail Dames offers safe and supportive activities that promote personal growth, friendship, self-confidence, self-confidence and a love of the outdoors.”
5. Unexpected Walkers

Possible Hikers One “A diverse, anti-racist, body liberating outdoor community of underrepresented outdoor people” created by groundbreaking jenny bruso. In the last 6½ years of Possible Walkers, Jenny has led more than 100 marches in 17 states!
Not only that, but Jenny’s too. first series of oversized backpacks with Gregory Packsand even co-designed the Possible Hikers shoe @Merrell in sizes beyond their standard offerings in both “women’s” and “men’s” patterns and with a wider choice of widths.
“Yeah, literally outdoor doesn’t discriminate. Trails, trees, lakes, etc. We know it doesn’t prevent us from going out and no one gets a handwritten invitation, but the exclusion isn’t always verbal.”
