Personally, I’ve always loved the softness and drape of wool flannel pants, and although styles change from year to year, I always think this is a flattering look for the office.

(Especially for silk long johns, but that goes for most of what’s out right now – they do a great job at blocking the wind when outside, but don’t add a lot of extra warmth or bulk when inside, so they’re great for ALL trousers, but especially if there’s something between you and itchy wool pants. as a layer.)

My Best Choice for Winter Women’s Dress Pants: Wool Flannel Trousers
If you’re looking for warm winter pants, flannel pants are the holy grail in my opinion. They don’t itch like wool or tweed, but they drape better and feel more versatile than velvet or other options. Of course, the downside is that you usually pay too much for them…

Another Great Option for Winter Women’s Dress Trousers: Other Wool Trousers and Wool Blends
I reserve wool flannels because I think it’s the softest, warmest, and most versatile—but there are zillions of other wool blends and wool fabrics out there, including wool gabardine and wool mixed with something for stretch. These can still be itchy – remember silk long johns They’re great for this because they’re soft, block out the wind, and don’t add bulk or extra warmth when inside.
Note that off-season wool (also known as tropical wool and “light wool”) is also great for winter, but as we mentioned earlier in our advice on whether you can wear a tropical wool suit in winterIt can be a little chilly on the windiest and coldest days. Tweeds can be wool or polyester – but for my $0.02 I have always preferred tweed as a skirt over pants because the inner thighs of the pants can be unevenly worn and/or ragged.
Wool blends are much easier to find than flannel – but you’ll have to try the pants on to see how warm they really are. Warm Winter Dress Pants, Lux Edition: Cashmere
Cashmere pants are easier than ever to find, but most (many) of them are barely a step beyond athletic wear or even leisure pants – so get to know your office. More structured cashmere trousers will be more suitable for conservative offices.

Velvet & Corduroy Pants for Work Wear
I combine velvet and corduroy because both can be used both ways, but corduroy is more comfortable in nature and more elegant in nature. But if you see any of the fabrics in a five-pocket style (like jeans), trousers are only generally acceptable for a more casual office (or a workday weekend in a conservative office, for example). (Know your office!)
On the other hand, if you see it cropped like trousers or other work trousers or even simply without pockets (or just striped pockets), it’s much more acceptable to wear in conservative offices. Keep in mind that the rustling sound of both pants when walking can be a problem in an office where the hallways are very quiet, and this fluff can be a problem with both. (If you’re experiencing a feather emergency at work, a Fed Ex mailing bag works in a pinch…)
A ton of corduroy jeans have come out recently – remember that these aren’t acceptable in every office, so know yours. BONUS Category for Warm Women’s Dress Pants: Long Johns and Silk Leggings
One last thing to note: long johns can be a life saver, whether you’re using them to make an already warm trousers SUPER warm, or to warm up a favorite less seasonal trousers (like a washable trousers, possibly a work cotton blend) or an unlined suit. to use as a lining for their trousers.
These are especially great when the problem is wind rather than heat (as in a city like Chicago) – especially since a silk long johns block the wind so it won’t overheat you when you walk in.
