Best Brands of Sunscreen Clothing for Women

[ad_1]

After being personally affected by melanoma (you can read) about it here), I’ve been diligent and conscientious about the things I can do to make sure I’m protecting my skin from further damage from the sun. I’m sure most of you know how to wear sunscreen, wear a sun hat, and limit sun exposure during peak UV hours. But have you ever tried wearing a UPF outfit? Today, I want to share some of the best brands of sun protection clothing for women and why you should wear UPF clothing. I’m also sharing a few of my favorite UPF clothing items that are worth investing in.

If you’re interested in diving deeper into the topic of sun protection for your skin, I’ve written a few more posts you might like:

What is UPF clothing?

I like clothes, but most of them do not protect you from sun damage. As SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is written on the front of sunscreen bottles, UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is a similar concept and measures the amount of UVB and UVA rays that can reach your skin through a garment. Anything higher than UPF 30 is eligible for the Skin Cancer Fundamentals Seal of Recommendation. They rate UPF 50+ clothing as excellent, so these are the products I try to find when shopping.

Why is it important to wear sunscreen clothing?

The truth is, while you should be applying sunscreen every day, reapplying it every 90 minutes can be tricky and messy to remember. I’ve been there and learned the hard way. The effects of the sun can be seen and felt even on the cloudiest of days. This is where wearing sunscreen clothing comes into play.

Even if you spent your teenage years in the solarium or sunbathing, Never It’s too late to start protecting your skin. One of my favorite things about wearing UPF clothing is that unlike SPF you don’t need to reapply. A UPF 50+ garment blocks 98% of UVA and UVB rays while you’re on it. Unfortunately, the UPF of a simple white t-shirt you can have in your closet is around 7. It’s as simple as choosing to wear it when you wake up in the morning and finding the one that suits your style.

On days when you spend a lot of time outside, especially during the warmer months, I highly recommend wearing SPF clothing on your face, UPF clothing on your body (at least a top or shawl) and a wide-brimmed sunscreen hat.

Top UPF Clothing Brands

If you’ve shopped for sunscreen clothing before, you’ve probably noticed that these aren’t the trendiest garments. Many are designed for outdoor athletic activities that are perfect for walkers and cyclists but not as stylish as a woman might want for her everyday life. Because I refused to dress like I was going fishing, I made it my goal to find stylish sunscreen clothing that would make me (and you) look stylish while still blocking out the sun’s harmful rays.

Below you will find a list of brands and stores that carry UPF clothing. One of the most popular brands you’ve seen me share before colibar. I’ve been a fan of her outfits and hats for years. Brands like Cabana Life, Sailor-Sailor, and Lilly Pulitzer are resort clothing brands, to name a few. They carry many bright, colorful patterns and prints that you can take with you on a trip to Florida or Mexico. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are tons of simpler and more subtle options that don’t shout “I’m on vacation”.
