Reader Question: My biggest style challenge is finding my signature style. Despite my creative, rebellious nature, I tend to gravitate towards very basic clothing (although I’m partial to graphic tees, Converse sneakers, and my motorcycle jacket). I am trying to get promoted in my company. I invest in some work clothes that match my color. However, I’m struggling to find a signature style that fits the brand I want to reflect (I’m a corporate storyteller).

One of the things I love to do is stack tons of jewellery… I’m not sure that’s enough. But maybe you can tell me!

What Is a Signature Style, Anyway?

It could almost look like a uniformThink Vogue editor Anna Wintour (signed bob, frock and sunglasses) or Ellen Degeneres (pants, shirt and sweater or vest) or Jackie Kennedy Onassis – here you can pretty much guess what they’re going to wear every day. If you go for the uniform version, it’s a very defined look.

Then you can look at her signature style as something less monotonous and much more flowing, for example Lady Gaga, a meat-a-day dress, ostrich feathers from head to toe, they’re certainly not uniform, but they’re both very outrageous expressions. in their own way.

Or for my friend and co-creator Jill Chivers, you can look to find something identifiable in every outfit that says “brand you” with leopard print. Every outfit has a leopard element (discussing that in this post) post in signature styles). Or the century-old Iris Apfel, known for her big round glasses. It may be something specific like this for you or less specific, but still, there will be something identifiable about each look and outfit to make it your signature style.

1. Know What Works for Your Body and Coloring

This is the basis of where to start. If you don’t know what really works for you, if it’s in harmony with your unique body and color, you’ll have a hard time developing a signature style that you love and that makes you feel and look great every day.

Do you have more than one particular garment, type or style of clothing in your wardrobe? Maybe you’re a wrap dress queen, biker jacket goddess, or boho ball aficionado. Whatever it is, this can be a great indicator of your signature style.

Butterflies are one of my signature motifs (because I love what they express – I love the transformation) – now I don’t like all butterfly prints, but I have a few butterfly pieces and jewelry in my wardrobe and when I come across a butterfly I Love it, it comes to my wardrobe!
