What are the keys to creating flattering outfits for the 8 body shapes (one of the two hourglass body shapes)?

Shape 8’s shoulders and hips may be of similar width, or their shoulders may be narrower than their hips, but they have a defined waist. If you want to get all the details, The Body Shape Bible is here.

The widest part of the hips is at the high hip – just below the waist, unlike the X-shaped hourglass whose widest point is at the upper thigh – read more about the X shape here). I think of their shape as a Barbie Doll shape. Check out this post about How can I really tell the difference between shape 8 and shape X hourglass.

That’s why you want to consider these key points when putting the outfits together:

Highlight your waist

Big, baggy and boxy silhouettes are not for you. Consider that all clothing is pulled at the waist because the garment fits naturally that way, or a belt has been added to over-pull the bulky fabric. So for all these bulky blouses and sweaters, you have to make some kind of half/French tuck or pull with a belt to accentuate your waist!

Your body is designed to: straight silhouette! It follows and adapts to your magnificent curves.

Don’t Add Additional Width to Your Hips

Most 8 shapes I’ve worked with have told me they don’t want to accentuate their hips. So avoid tops and jackets that end around your high hips to make sure you don’t do this. Instead, end the tops at the waist (you can tighten them) or at the lower hips (if you don’t have a hip slant) for a flattering silhouette.

Choose shorter jackets and tops instead of longer thigh options.

Avoid horizontal details around your hips. This includes tops and jacket hems, as well as hip pockets on cardigans or longer coats, horizontal distress at the crotch of your jeans, and patch pockets on trousers.

Curved hems that are higher on the sides and sloping down at the front are always an eye-catching option if you want to hide your tummy a bit!8 How Can You Straighten Your Shaped Body?

Get Attention to Details

Draw attention to your upper body with interest and detail. You can use colors, patterns and accessories for this. Whatever your shape, it’s always flattering to add some kind of focal point to your portrait space!

Keeping these simple guidelines in mind, you can play around with your wardrobe and create stylish and flattering outfits. Here are some examples.

  1. Consider pencil skirts instead of fit and flare to enhance and elongate your gorgeous shape. You can fold it more curvedly over clothes – the peplum shape is made for your body. Leopard outfit, with dark teal steampunk Victorian waterfall vest jacket (you can find it here in a range of colors) or, alternatively, a short, curved cardigan (stay away from straight hems as you widen the hips) will work well.
  2. If you want to highlight your slim waist, add a belt.
  3. Make sure all bulky tops go in at the waist or tuck in if they don’t, you can blouse over your lower half if you have a bit of a tummy and want to hide it.
  4. Boots and light flares work well to stabilize your hips.
  5. Ties at or just above the waist accentuate your curves and pull garments in at your tightest point.
  6. Wear a dress with a denim jacket – make sure it’s shortened to the waist or styled at the waist rather than short or down to your hips.
