6 Things to Know About Los Angeles-based Luxe Plus Line, Sante Grace

one.Sante Grace is poor French for Saint Grace. Designer Tracy Christian named the line after her grandmother (Grace), who taught her to sew. “When my grandmother was a young woman, she found herself in a bad marriage with five young children. She financed her exit from marriage by sewing for “valiant” women in her church. She moved from chattanooga to New Jersey and started a new life thanks to design.”

2. Before Tracy started Sante Grace, she used to design and have her own clothes made. “I never understood why someone goes through all the work of designing, fitting and building a garment just to make it out of cheap textiles. I want the best I can afford. I am more quality than quantity. Sometimes the best thing I can’t afford!

But if good linens and silks are suitable for emperors and pharaohs, then they are suitable for me.

“Silk is a miraculous natural fabric. It insulates and breathes. It travels well and something looks even better after it creases a bit and washes off. When what you wear matters; choose silk.”

3. Tracy created Sante Grace to end the crying in the dressing room. You know how some girls grow up hanging out at the mall or shopping for fun? She shares her own experiences for Tracy…

“I used to cry in the dressing room or argue with my mom because the clothes didn’t fit. I hated looking at my body in the Lane Bryant dressing room mirror. Nothing turned out the way it was supposed to and it felt like it was my fault.”

Tracy describes how she sees herself and the challenges she faced: “I was tall, with a wide belly, high hips, slim waist and bustled. Now I have Sante Grace and our fair share is generous to flatter a more typical American figure. The clothes are real size, not just the plus size.”

4. Did you know that Sante Grace has a Secret VIP list? Yes, and it was something their customers made up themselves! “We make a lot of garments that never go into a larger production run. That’s why when we make 6 or 8 of a product, I’m calling out to customers who have made their voices heard about their favorite outfits via email or social media.”

5. They are connected to the community they have ties to Plus Bus. “Jen Wilder and Marcy are partners at Plus Bus and Jen was running the production line when I started Sante Grace. The ladies were great and now some of the Sante Grace is sold on Plus Bus.”

6. Tracy is a real-life talent agent! “I’ve been a talent agent for the past 25 years. Ha and I’m really good at that. I’m lucky to have Oscar, Golden Globe-winning clients… There have already been celebrities wearing Sante Grace at the Grammys, but seeing someone in my clothes at the Oscars for the first time makes me cry.”
