As you adjust to a new body after having something familiar for a long time, it’s important to be kind to yourself in the process. But the good news is that no matter your size or shape, there are ways to dress to look and feel your best.

1. Adopt Your Current Body Shape

The first step in dressing for menopause weight gain is to embrace your current body shape and learn how to fit in with it. Many women notice that their weight is redistributed during menopause, which means they may gain weight in different areas than before and their body shape may change. You can no longer rely on old habits as they are no longer in harmony with your new body shape. Look at your body shape, proportions and variations to find which styles and details work best for you. I like to add a layer of jacket (when the weather is right for it) to cover my post-menopausal muffin top midsection (now that’s a mouthful). Layering over your body is a great way to go. creating vertical lines (extended and attenuation) and covering the middle.

Change your wardrobe thoughtfully by focusing on what styles, shapes, colors, prints, patterns and details work for your body shape and personality. That way, you can avoid spending money on clothes that don’t flatter your new body shape.

When shopping for clothes, try to focus on products that flatter your body shape, rather than trying to fit a certain size or style. That might mean looking for some stretchy clothing and finding styles that highlight your best features. For example, if you’ve gained weight in your midsection, look for tops that hug your tummy instead of holding onto your belly. If you’re shy about your arms, look for tops with sleeves that protect you.

4. Choose the Right Fabrics

The fabrics you choose can also make a big difference in how you look and feel. As menopause deals with weight gain, you may find that your body is more sensitive to heat and cold. Look for fabrics that are breathable and lightweight, such as cotton, linen, and rayon. These materials will help you stay cool and comfortable even on hot days.

Avoid heavy or stiff fabrics such as denim or wool. These materials can be offensive and highlight any area you are conscious of. Instead, choose draped and flowy fabrics such as silk or chiffon. These materials will help create a flattering silhouette without adding bulk.

Finally, don’t be afraid to use accessories to enhance your look. Accessories can be a great way to draw attention to your best features and distract from areas where you feel less confident. For example, if you’re uncomfortable with your tummy area, try wearing a flashy necklace or earrings that fit over your bust to draw your eyes up.

You can also use accessories to add a pop of color to your outfits, which can help you feel more confident and vibrant. Look for scarves, belts, and jewelry in dark shades that complement your skin tone and hair color.
