“Where should I shop?” It was a question I received via email this week by a lovely reader.

And my answer was “I don’t know”.

Why is this?

Because there’s a lot I need to know BEFORE I even consider suggesting places to shop. In fact, shopping is not the solution to your wardrobe woes.

People often worry that they won’t be able to participate in a styling program because they think they’ll be told to go shopping and buy some special clothes to fix their style, but that’s the opposite of what I’m saying. overall recommended (unless you really have NO clothes in your wardrobe or everything you have is completely shabby and worn out beyond repair.)

Why Not More Shopping Solutions To Your Wardrobe Problems?





1. Some Reasons Why Shopping Isn’t the Solution

If you haven’t been trained in all aspects of style, you’ll understand what really works:

  • Your body
  • your color
  • your personality
  • your lifestyle
  • your values
  • your preferences

Then there’s no point in shopping, because you’ll probably be spending more money on things that don’t fix the mess in your closet.

And if you don’t know what’s in your wardrobe or what you need, then please stay away from the stores!

2. Shopping with Magical Thinking

I see many magical thoughts going on and this is, “If I find the right garment – the perfect garment that will solve all my problems, match everything in my wardrobe, make all the clothes I’m not wearing really work, and make me stylish and gorgeous.”

It’s such a magical thought. Have you ever had such a magical thought?

We think it’s a magic garment that works what we don’t currently wear, when in fact it’s good money scattering after a bad purchase and you should leave the item you don’t wear after wearing it once. you understand why it didn’t work, because then you have the authority not to make the same mistake again.

Unfortunately, the magic suit is not available, so you shouldn’t waste any more time looking for it!

Shopping is something you don’t want to do until you know the criteria you set up in your own personalized style guidelines so you know exactly what you should buy and what’s right and wrong. Don’t buy the wrong things.

3. Retailers Want to Buy You

There are many tricks retailers use to get you to buy, from the way they sell stores (more expensive on the right) to the way their staff helps you. Did you know that people are more likely to shop from a snobby than from a friendly sales assistant at an expensive design store? Because when we feel humiliated, buying something tells us “up you” As your brain says to the snobby retail assistant, “I can buy this expensive thing even if you think I’m not good enough or can’t afford it.” See if this is difficult and not what you expected!

4. Hunter Gatherer and Happiness Hormone Pulse

Old hunter gatherer still inside us and whispering in your ear that you “must” Buy something and take it home to show that your efforts in the hunt are rewarded. This reward is a dopamine hit your brain gives you when you complete a task, and it’s also the reason why so many people are social media addicts. Fortunately, there are other ways to get a healthy dopamine hit than shopping or surfing social media without a plan. Instead, do some other type of self-care activity or just try something new, take a class (like me) 7 Steps to Style or one of my many senior classes) this not only helps you shop more effectively, but also gives you a dopamine hit without bringing more wrong things to your wardrobe – now it’s a win-win!).

Or maybe you like shopping with a friend or loved one, and this togetherness increases oxytocin, also known as the love hormone. Time together is what counts, so if you’re shopping with a friend as a social outing, why not spend time with them hiking in nature or getting together for a coffee (or beverage of your choice)? ) instead of shopping if you find that the things you buy aren’t in your wardrobe that you love when you bring them home and you still keep getting that nice oxytocin hit.

5. Your Value and Value

Are you a bargain hunter and buy from the sales rack just because you think it’s not worth the money? It’s sneaky and the subject guilt and buying clothes is something Jill Chivers and I have discussed here.

This is common, and I know it’s something I have to tinker with and reframe to be able to buy it at full price when I find the right garment for me. But that didn’t come until I got my style training, and I researched why I thought I wasn’t worth the money, and then challenged that cause (and therefore lost the battle).

Or are you into marketing saying “I’m Worth It” and whenever you’re feeling a little down, you shop and bring something home, whether you need it or not, will it suit you or work with anything else? in your wardrobe?

Studies show that you don’t wear half of what you buy each year! If you add in what it costs not just to your wallet but to the planet, that’s something you’ll want to change, but if you don’t have the right information then you’ll keep making the same mistakes.
