Shopping over 3X as a plus size person can be really difficult. Big brands are almost never size inclusive, and if they are, those sizes are definitely not in-store. This is where independent brands contribute greatly to the plus size community. They meet a need in the market that many big brands have not touched.

That’s why we’ve put together a few independent brands you need to know, including a few sizes that have been on our radar for a while! And what’s exciting is the range of personal styles on display, from sophisticated and sweet to alternative and fun!

Owner Terrance Williams is a self-taught sewer master and offers clothing and accessories with sustainability in mind. Their leggings and caftans are absolutely breathtaking because of the unique fabrics used. The best part is that they are custom made to order to customers’ measurements.

She describes her designs on her website as dimensional and gender neutral. terrance counties, “I wanted to create a brand where inclusiveness is at the forefront. Fashion can be very limiting and exclusionary. I wanted to create a safe space where people feel beautiful in my clothes and accessories. People who wear large and large sizes should never feel like a burden.”

2. ShopTaby and Taby Originals

ShopTaby was started by Taby Davila, a curvy Latina who felt underrepresented in the plus-size fashion space. He wanted to create a space where people of all marginal identities felt represented.

5. Evan Biddell

Evan Biddell was the first winner of Project Runway Canada, designer on Project Runway Allstars, and guest host on Drag Race Canada. Her signature product is the jumpsuit, a flying squirrel-shaped jumpsuit that inspires movement and creativity for every body type.

In my personal experience, these coveralls are incredibly inclusive as they are flowy and cut. Sizes are listed by height due to their design, but Evan has recommendations for getting a size up if you’re a plus size.

6. Nerecina

Nerecina is a made-to-order fashion brand offering self-expressive, customizable and sustainably produced formal wear. Their designs are unique and timeless.

Nerecina’s goal is to change the way women shop by creating stunning, unique designs in luxury fabrics, eliminating categories and ideals, and offering personalization options for every item sold.

Paige also wants to continue adding variety in clothing – adding more sizes, adding small and tall varieties, and adding some one-day custom sizes. Paige’s partner Alison takes care of emails, quality assurance, fulfillment and delivery.

Trash Queen’s products are made to order and anything else is made in small batches to be more sustainable and produce slow fashion. “Fashion is not one size fits all. Miranda Sharp is the creator of Softcore, which carries the XL-5X sizes. Softcore is an alternative lifestyle brand for plus size individuals of all genders. He created all the designs himself, including the body.

Miranda, “I wanted to create a line where fat people, especially weird fat people like me, were prioritized and celebrated. Fat people are portrayed so one-dimensionally in the media and I wanted to show that we have all kinds of interests and can be alternative fashion icons! I make art and clothes that show fat people that we can be spiritual fairies or gothic witches. We can come forward and be the main characters in our own stories.”

10. Watery Body Goddess
